While there is software available for most things you do on your computer it all comes at a price; a price that, in many cases, some people simply cannot afford. But there is no need to worry; it is amazing just how much free software is available (and this is legitimate free software, not pirated software) that is an ideal substitute for the paid for versions.

On this page you will find some of the better known freeware applications. While surfing the Internet you might find a whole lot more, but please be careful when downloading. Some free software may give you more than what you bargained for. To be safe always go on recommendation, just because an applications description matches what you want doesn't mean it is going to be suitable for your needs.

Okay I can't cover everything, but what you will find below is links to software I either use, recommend, or is used by a vast majority of users'

avastAvast is an anti virus application. We are all familiar with viruses' and what they can do, it is important, therefore, to have suitable protection.
 
avgAVG is another anti virus application. A has a slightly more user friendly front end compared with Avast.
 
zone alarmZone Alarm is a firewall application. Although Windows XP and Vista have built in firewalls (meaning you don't need a second one) some people prefer a more user friendly firewall such as Zone Alarm.
 
openofficeOpenOffice is a fully featured office suite containing applications for Writing (word processor); Drawing; Spreadsheet; Presentation and Information. If you can't afford Microsoft's own Office Suite then this is the next best thing.
